Best DDS function waveform generator for the price
By Pj from Hollywood
PRICE: After comparing many wave form generators, both digital and analog, I opted for the ATTEN ATF20B as the best value overall, in my opinion, regardless of the fact that direct A-B comparisons are difficult with any electronics, as features don't fully match up one for one. Marketing makes it that way, leaving room for spin.
DISPLAY: In my opinion, the ATF20B has a much more attractive display (color) than the more expensive Instek SFG-2110 unit with "last year's technology" (black & white). The ATTEN ATF20B unit's color display looks so cool on my bench.
FEATURES: The ATF20B has more features for the price than any other unit on the market that I could find. I'm not a pro electronics technician or engineer, but this unit has plenty to teach me and lots of room to grow.
The closest competitor to the ATF20B, the GW Instek SFG 2110 has only 10MHz band width [instead of ATF20B's 20MHz] and at a much higher price. Also, the adjustment knob on the Instek unit is reportedly very slow to respond. The ATTEN ATF20B, however is very quick to respond, with no lag at all.
RS232 vs. USB 2.0 interface: I cannot comment on ATTEN's decision to use the RS232 interface instead of the USB 2.0, like Instek does. I did notice, however, that the $1500 Agilent DDS function generator uses RS232, so it must have something going for it, such as programmable, repeatable testing procedures, which I can't imagine ever using.
As an update, more than a month after receiving the ATF20B, the software provided with the unit for the RS-232 cannot be installed onto my computer, thus far. No matter what I try, it just doesn't install. One should be able to install it with a few clicks of a mouse, but no such luck. I can only use the program from the disk in my disk drive and only some of the commands work.
This has been reported to the factory, but to date [a month later] they have not responded. Atten.eu has been very helpful. The Sain Store has responded, but not with any useful information.
Also, the provided software that cannot be installed is very pedestrian or limited. So this may be the weak link in the system. There is a company web site in China, but no FAQ or tutorials. I just sent an email to them. Let's see what happens. I think Atten is missing out on an opportunity to develop loyal customers and sell them additional equipment.
That said, the unit operates fine when using the controls on the front, which is probably the way most would use it any way. So if one doesn't need an automated feature, don't worry about it.
BUILD QUALITY: Contrary to what one reviewer said, my unit arrived with no rattles or off-kilter display. I've been through the manual, step-by-step for several pages and everything works as intended. True, there are some inconsistencies between the manual and the unit, but none that I couldn't figure out and probably can chalk up to translation and/or proof reading issues; not faults in the unit.
WARRANTY: Thus far, I have not been able to find any reference to a warranty, however there are implied warranties of merchantability in many states, including California, if that applies. There is no mention about a warranty on Amazon.com regarding ATTEN ATF20B. Perhaps the ATTEN.eu website may have some information [...]
The question remains, however, in the unlikely event that the unit dies, where does one go to service it? If there is a warranty, who services the warranty? Does anyone know? This may take some research, but such information should be on the Amazon.com web site along with product information. True, that's not marketing hype, but it does go to customer confidence. Right?
UPGRADES: I have not been able to locate any information on availability of upgrades, e.g. Power Amplifier, or USB2.0 interface. If anyone has been able to discover this, it may be helpful to post it in your review.
PURCHASING DECISIONS: As a policy, I never buy just what I need, but always opt for a few levels up so as to allow expansion. Every time I've purchased a computer with just what I needed (for example)I always wound up taking it back for the upgraded unit. That's why I didn't buy a basic analog unit, but bought the best digital unit I could afford.
Naturally, each must determine his/her needs now and in the future, but for my money, the ATTEN ATF20B is the best unit for the price.

Amazing
By YAS
The ATTEN ATF20B DDS Function Generator performed better than my expectation. It works as advertised. I do no expect it to come close to high end FG instruments' performance but for its price it delivers great signals and provides sufficient controls to generate well known functions.

Excellent Equipment!!!
By M. Zug
This is one of the best equipments (for the price) that i bought in the last 10 years. The functions are much more that i will ever use. On the back you have 2 more outputs (ttl-a) and (ttl-b) each one with settable frequency also!
The display is nicer and clearer than my Rigol and Tek scope! I open it, and the built quality is excellent!
I recommend it!
I am very sorry for the one bad review. It must be a competitor one. On my review you can confirm that I am a certified owner.
Love it!!!
