5Get more scope than you pay for!

This is a superb oscilloscope, especially for this price. I love it!

First off it is the size (and about the weight) of and old style lunch box. I can pick it up with one hand, without using the handle. With a great 5.5" on the diagonal, full color, TFT screen.
2 Channels WITH PROBES INCLUDED. And internal compensation up to 1000V for any type of probe you could ever connect to it. So the unit does the math for you. You never have to remember to do the math when you set your probe to 5X or 10X or even 500X. Just set the conversion internally and go to measuring signals.
Math functions are A+B, A-B, A*B and.... FFT (fast fourier transform).
It has 10 internal storage locations to save waveforms for review. There is a USB memory stick slot in the front and you can save .wvf files that the unit can read, or you can save .bmp files that save a complete picture of the screen.
Coursers can be set to manual or auto track, and auto readouts are numerous. Sometimes this scope will almost tell you more than you want to know. :)

The only problem I had was with the software. So, keep in mind. After you run the installation of the main program, you have to run the .msi (Microsuck install script) file, located in one of the sub directories. If you do not, you will get a missing .DLL error message.

After you install the software on your computer, you can save unlimited images that will allow you to use cursor measurements, as well as run "Pass/Fail" test runs.

There are to many capabilities to cover here. Leave it to say. This is a great scope in both quality and functionality. I am an engineer and I work as a technician, if that lends any credence to this review.

4Best bang for the buck.

This scope is the best bang for the buck out there amongst digital scopes, better even than getting a used Tektronix. There are a few niggling bugs in the firmware (hence 4 stars instead of 5) but nothing showstopping.

I was able to successfully "upgrade" the firmware on this scope as well (see EEVBlog again for more info) using just a USB cable. Even more bang for the buck. :)

5Considering Its Price, Excellent

Overall I am quite happy with my Rigol DS1052E, its performance is quite good considering its price! Its a definite bargain when compared to other DSO sticker prices; 50Mhz bandwidth, 1G samples per second, has a USB memory stick port which is the answer to most of my needs for extracting data in a high voltage electronic noisy environment. This feature allows me to easily transfer data from the DSO to my computer for documenting my experiments using data plot software without having to resort to very expensive high voltage noise isolation optical links. It has two input channels and descent color display all this for $400 or less! It has sufficient sampling rate to get decent performance at 50Mhz, even at single shot!

When I first got it I check it out with my old restored Tek 190B constant amplitude oscillator set to 50Mhz. The sine wave graphics was relatively clean. I decided to test the smoothness of the graphics that was expected at 1 G sample per second. For single shot triggering a 200nsec pulse generator was used ;the waveform was captured wonderfully. The triggering is descent in the various modes that I tested.

The Rigol software"UltraScope..." has several down sides. Getting the software to install properly in computers running Windows XP can be challenging. I experienced run time error trying to get it to install correctly on several computers which I understand is due to corrupt registry problems. After using various registry clean up software I eventually got the software to operate properly in XP. I have not been able to get it to work in Windows Vista. This soft ware seems to mostly focus on remote DSO operation using USB or RS232 interface. You can down load data to your computer that the DSO just captured; but I have not been able to find out how to down load the reference data stored on the DSO itself. But since I am using the very handy USB memory stick feature for collecting data in a highly noisy electronic environment this software is not very useful to me. Even though the software has problems I am still happy with my Rigol DS1052E; I really can't complain that much considering its performance and price!
