The Tektronix TDS2014C is a 100MHz, four-channel, portable digital oscilloscope with a maximum real-time sample rate of 2GS/s per channel, a record length of 2.5 kpts per channel, advanced triggering, three basic math functions and FFT, 16 measurement parameters, waveform limit testing, and USB connectivity for electronics applications such as product design, assembly lines, repair and servicing, and electrical engineering education, among others. The sample rate, which provides real-time sampling with a minimum of 10 times oversampling, and record length enable long capture times for displaying detailed waveforms. All channels can simultaneously run at the maximum sample rate. Rising and falling edge, pulse width, and line-selectable video triggers allow isolation of specific signals. Three basic math functions—add, subtract, and multiply—plus FFT (fast fourier transform) and 16 measurement parameters such as period, frequency, and peak-to-peak enable an in-depth analysis of waveforms. To aid troubleshooting, the waveform limit test provides a pass/fail comparison of a triggered input signal to a user-defined setting. The data logging feature automatically saves triggered waveforms to a USB memory device for up to 24 hours. Additional specifications include a rise time of 3.5ns and various triggering features. The oscilloscope has a 5.7" diagonal color TFT (thin film transistor) LCD with a resolution of 320 x 240 pixels and an anti-glare surface for viewing waveforms.

The oscilloscope has a USB host port for storing data on a 64GB-maximum USB flash drive (sold separately) and a USB device port for connecting to a PC or compatible printer (USB cable sold separately). It includes OpenChoice PC communications software (compatible with Microsoft Windows 2000, XP PRO, Vista, and 7) for transferring and saving settings, waveforms, measurements, and screen images. It meets European Standard (EN) and International Electrotechnical Commission 61010-1:2001, Underwriters Laboratory (UL) 61010-1:2004, and Canadian Standards Association (CSA) C22.2 61010-1:2004 safety standards, and is rated for category (CAT) II installations to 300V, which covers energy-consuming equipment connected to a fixed installation, including household, office, and laboratory appliances. It has European Conformity (CE) marking. The unit comes with four 200MHz passive voltage probes, PC software, a certificate of calibration, a 125VAC, 10 amp power cord, and a user manual.

H is height, the vertical distance from lowest to highest point; W is width, the horizontal distance from left to right; D is depth, the horizontal distance from front to back.

Oscilloscopes are electrical testing devices used to verify the functionality of equipment that generates an electrical signal. Oscilloscopes measure the voltage of an electrical signal over time, and display the measurement as a waveform in a visual graph. The waveform shows the sweeps (or refresh) of voltage on a vertical (Y) axis, and the time on a horizontal (X) axis. Details of a waveform demonstrate the signal over time. Most oscilloscopes have two or four channels for inputting a signal. Some digital oscilloscopes offer more than four channels, allowing channels to be dedicated to specific signals and applications. Bandwidth is the maximum frequency of a signal that an oscilloscope can capture. A constant image will display if a signal is shown at a high frequency. Oscilloscopes may be analog, digital, or mixed signal. An analog oscilloscope directly displays an input signal as a continuous waveform, typically in a luminous phosphor on a cathode ray tube (CRT). A digital oscilloscope converts the input signal into a digital format and reassembles the waveform for display, typically on an LCD. A mixed signal oscilloscope (MSO) displays both analog and digital formats. Some oscilloscopes can display more than one channel and type of measurement simultaneously. Some oscilloscopes can capture waveform signals to memory, and recall them. They may provide real-time intensity grading, and may have the ability to adjust frequency of display. Oscilloscopes can be powered with batteries or electricity, or may have a built-in generator. They are commonly used for testing, measuring, and inspecting in science, engineering, telecommunications, automotive, and electronics applications.

5Very capable o-scope with all the features you could want.

I've owned and used oscilloscopes since I was about 16 years old (starting with a Heathkit I built.) As a Navy Electronics Technician in the 70's and 80's I worked with the legendary behemoth Tektronix 'scopes with all of the interchangeable modules and was always impressed with their superb functionality, stability, and performance. So when I decided to get an up-to-date 'scope to support my continued experimentation with electronics and embedded computing I wanted to get the best combination of features and price in a very-high-quality oscilloscope. So a Tektronix was the obvious place to start.

I have not been disappointed. This oscilloscope has all of the functionality of the big old analog scopes and more in a small light package, and that functionality is rock-solid. The features all work and work well. Tektronix is not trying to stretch the limits of what the hardware can do (with the resulting flakiness), but instead delivering stable presentation, accuracy, and helpful features. The display is crisp and clear, with many helpful annotations and messages. The controls are well organized, smooth and precise in operation. There are a number of helpful control buttons like "Set trigger to 50%" and "Center horizontal display on trigger" that are very useful time-savers. It's clear that this 'scope was designed by people who have used them. The "Autorange" and "Autoset" buttons are extremely handy as well.

This is my first digital storage oscilloscope and there are a number of features new to me that I really appreciate. The on-screen help is a great idea. It is well-written and actually very helpful. The ability to store setup information, waveform images, and waveform data either in the scope or in USB memory stick is wonderful. Built-in FFT analysis, while not the forte of the instrument, is very handy and useful and it's limitations are clearly explained in the manual. The ability to deliver images and settings data to a computer or printer via (yet another) USB port on the rear of the instrument is very nice.

Speaking of the manual, this is another place for a company to skimp and Tektronix has, instead, delivered an excellent, detailed, well written product. It has a section which is essentially a general storage oscilloscope primer as well as detailed instructions for this line of oscilloscopes and very complete lists of specifications and control functions. Tips for getting the most out of the instrument are inserted where appropriate and are very helpful.

Complaints: I don't have many. The Tektronix software for data transfer and display on a computer is a little clunky. The drivers have some issues on Windows XP. I haven't tried them on Windows 7 yet, but this often solves such problems.This is a low impact issue to me because I don't depend on this feature and in any case you can write the files to a USB memory stick and manipulate them on your PC that way. The images can be stored in several lossless formats and the data can be brought in to spreadsheet software for detailed analysis and plotting. I don't appreciate the NI LabView software come-on where they give you full use of their software for 30 days, then it falls back to the minimal version unless you spend $800. This may just be my particular pet-peeve but it always rankles me so I thought I'd mention it. Not really Tektronix's fault.

Summary: There are more powerful 'scopes out there and for much less money. But if you want a solid, reliable, full-featured, well-designed Cadillac of an oscilloscope that will deliver all the functionality it promises this line of 'scopes is a great choice. If you are a Maker-Space, an educational institution, or a serious electronics experimenter/inventor looking to acquire an oscilloscope that will meet or exceed your expectations the Tektronix TDS-2000 line will deliver.

5Quality never goes out of style

I have owned a Tek TDS 2014 for more than 10 years and have always found it to be the best instrument in my collection.

It gives me answers to questions I never thought to ask, showing waveforms that give me information that I didn't know was there.

Reliable, easy to use, clear controls, tolerant of abuse (CAT II voltage class). This scope is a good friend who never lies to me.

On the other hand, if you don't know how to use a 'scope don't bother with it - it's not a hand-holder and won't teach you what you need to know - that's what technical schools and the university system is for. Basic theory isn't this 'scope's forte and it will make a fool of anyone with a thin layer of understanding - this is a professional tool, nothing else.
