Rigol DG1022 20 MHz Function Generator with second channel Review

UltraWave is the custom application software of DG Series Function/Arbitrary Waveform Generator produced by RIGOL Technologies, Inc. Users can create, edit and manage waveforms through the powerful features of the waveform editor. We will give a brief introduction for the functions and features of UltraWave here in this section.? Simple, intuitive and attractive user interface The UltraWave interface is modern style design, artistic and refreshing. From the users' point of view, for the sake of habits and easy operations, UltraWave retains the traditional operation mode of menu and toolbar which covers the frequently used functions, and the buttons are very concise. UltraWave blends a perfect combination of traditional and modern, is attractive and practical, intricate and simple. As shown in the following figure, at the top of the display are the menu and tool bars, the left side is the standard waveform toolbar, the center is the waveform editing window, and at the bottom is the status bar. Multiple Interfaces UltraWave can communicate with the instrument through RS232, and USB (recommended) interfaces. Users can choose the interface freely as in need. Once communication being established, waveforms from DS series digital oscilloscopes or DG series digital signal generators can be imported. Users can also edit waveforms and send them to the generator and observe the waveform from an oscilloscope. Abundant Graphic Drawing Mode UltraWave provides nine standard waveforms to meet the most general needs of users. It provides capabilities of hand drawing, line (point by point) drawing and arbitrary points drawing thus make the generations of complex waveforms much easier. The multi-file management interface enables users to edit multiple waveforms. Moreover, UltraWave provides precise input mode for line drawing and arbitrary points editing, therefore users can draw accurate pulse, peak or jump to a specific time and point.

5Solid performance at an affordable price
By W. Mayhew
I purchased the DG1022 from the Rigol booth at a trade show in May of 2011. I was skeptical that an instrument with a price tag about one fourth of what Agilent and Tektronix would ask could be good. A few minutes checking out the demo instument at Rigol's boot dispelled any doubts. This is a very good test insturment that meets its specifications and is very easy to use.

I have not needed to use the ability to download ARB waveforms from my computer, so I have not tested that aspect of the DG1022. The built in standard waveforms and 40 or so pre-loaded ARB waveforms cover most bases. The DG1022 has USB device/host capability and comes with a driver CD that should allow composing waveforms for download in Excel or controlling the DG1022 with Labview.

The DG1022 is very solid with good touch feedback on the buttons and selector knob. The DG1022 is not just a box full of air; there is a nice heft of real electronics inside when you pick up the DG1022 by its carry handle.

The one oddity I noticed is the same one Julia mentioned. For some reason the A and B channels are not phase-calibrated unless you go the utility menu and select align pahse; otherwise, the channels are in sync, but at some random phase angle.

1Do not buy this product from this company!!!
By Kelly Mann
Here are just a couple reasons:
1. The power cord for this device is an international (Chinese) 3 prong type NOT compatible with US wall outlets.
2. The manual that accompanies this function generator is in Mandarin only.
3. The default language for the menus on this device are in Mandarin Chinese as well.
4. The company does not replace the cord or the manual.
I contacted the company through Amazon.com and received a reply saying they were so sorry and replacement cord and manual were on the way. 2 weeks later I called the number provided in that reply email. I was assured by a man with a funny accent "No problem sir! We send it to you right now!" Still nothing.
I have used this type of function generator before with excellent results. The product is great, the shipper is crap.

5Fantastic Value and Quality for the Money
By Julia Truchsess
This FG is a delight to use - intuitive UI and all the functionality most users are likely to need. The only thing I needed to figure out was how to turn on the Sync output, which for some reason defaults to Off. Of course, it very logically is under the "Utility" menu. Illuminated controls, multiple display modes (graphic vs numeric) and fanless operation (YAY!!!) are all big pluses. Sweep and Burst modes are easy to set up. Everything just pretty much works the way you want and expect it to, which is how test equipment should be.

I am so happy to have finally replaced my P.O.S. Protek B8003 with its user-hostile interface, flaky performance, and noisy (getting noisier by the day) fan. Never again, Protek.
